Job Summary

The Department of Radiation Oncology is seeking an engineer specializing in the design and production of patient-specific components and research prototypes.

Responsibilities*

Develop prototype components for clinical applications

  • Collaborate with Medical Physics and Clinical faculty to design and produce patient-specific components in-house (principally 3D printed, but also laser-engraved or CNC=routed, etc..) for invasive (i.e. brachytherapy) & non-invasive (RT) procedures to improve delivery of treatment, patient safety, and reduce manufacturing time and cost
  • Evaluate and recommend resins and other materials to optimize biomedical compatibility and engineering and sterilization requirements for each prototype
  • Advise on 3D printer, rinse and curing equipment purchases and CAD software
  • Participate in training/continuing education workshops on 3D printers and post-print processing equipment, biomedical resins and modeling software

Develop prototype components or nonreplaceable parts for research applications

  • Collaborate with RadOnc faculty (and their research partners in other departments) to design novel or nonreplaceable components for Q&A (i.e. phantoms) or machine parts (i.e. for SARRP and orthovoltage) with CAD or DICOM image data and 3D print (or laser engrave or CNC route) in-house.
  • Evaluate and recommend resins and other materials to meet specific engineering requirements

Component production

  • Print 3D components on demand (possibly overnight) followed by post-processing (including IPA rinse cycle, heat/UV curing, polishing, thread tapping, etc..
  • Dispose of toxic waste products in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines and UM Environmental Health Service procedures
  • Perform 3D equipment maintenance & repair (not covered by service contract

Required Qualifications*

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position. 
  • 3-5 years professional experience.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience with 3D design, manufacturing and maintenance.
  • Experience with CAD or DICOM.
  • Experience with UM Research and Clinical protocols.
