Do you have experience helping utilities develop a portfolio of programs for energy efficiency, demand response, or building electrification? Are you passionate about helping utilities achieve their decarbonization goals? Do you track the latest trends in regulatory policy affecting utility clean energy programs and portfolios?
We’re looking for a client-facing subject-matter expert with experience in providing actionable recommendations to utilities. Someone who can make complex analysis actionable and clear. We expect this person to act as an industry-facing expert on how utilities can solve problems related to resource adequacy, load flexibility, and energy savings in a dynamic regulatory and political environment. We’d like you to jump in on day one to support junior researchers, solve real-world problems for our utility clients through written reports and live presentations, and lead DSM-focused, client-facing projects. The research manager role serves as the business domain expert for, sets the direction of, and manages the entire product lifecycle for the E Source demand-side management (DSM) research service. To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be the face of E Source’s demand-side management offerings by aligning our products and content to meet the needs of our utility clients. This is a unique opportunity at the center of a major energy industry transformation, helping utilities evolve and advance their portfolios of DSM programs.

What you’ll do
- Serve as our in-house expert on electric and gas DSM programs by answering on-demand client research requests and producing written perspectives for the industry.
- Keep track of current and upcoming utility best practices related to DSM portfolios.
- Create clear, concise, data-driven, and action-oriented content for topically focused reports, articles, technical briefs, and webinars.
- Mentor and train junior researchers on utility market needs, how utilities are changing, and new DSM program and regulatory strategies to address these needs.
- Provide sanity checks and a second set of eyes on numbers, analysis, and conclusions.
- Lead the agenda creation for large in-person events, host online webinars, and conduct client advisory calls in the DSM topical area.
- Set the annual research agenda and maintain the priorities for agile product delivery in a matrixed environment.
- Develop and implement new ideas that improve our DSM product health in alignment with business goals.
- Understand macro and micro industry trends and their impact on the product(s) you oversee.
- Represent client needs in the creation of deliverables. Create and leverage user stories to clearly define user needs and expectations.
- Visit clients at their offices and attend industry conferences as a speaker and product representative.
- Work with sales and marketing teams on go-to-market plans.

- Demonstrated expertise with the regulatory principles that govern energy-efficiency and demand-response programs.
- Knowledge about how utilities plan, design, implement, and evaluate DSM and electrification programs and an understanding of the key challenges they face in doing so.
- Prior experience making recommendations to utilities about advancing their customer energy solutions portfolios.
- Demonstrated ability to present technical analysis in a clear manner for your audience.
- Strategic, entrepreneurial mindset about how to make E Source’s offerings match clients’ needs.

The budgeted salary for this position is $90,000 to $120,000 USD + 8% annual bonus. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
This person can work 100% remote, but preference will be given for a hybrid schedule from of our physical office located in Boulder, Colorado.
